Parmarth Niketan

Ashram · Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

Parmarth Niketan sits on the eastern bank of the Ganges in Swargashram, the 'heavenly abode' district of Rishikesh, where the river curves beneath the Himalayas and suspension bridges sway over sacred water. Founded in 1942 by Pujya Swami Shukdevanandji Maharaj as a small meditation retreat, the ashram has grown into the largest in Rishikesh, over 1,000 rooms spread across abundant gardens dotted with statues of deities, the sacred Kalpavriksha tree, and a towering 14-foot Shiva overlooking the ghat. The name translates to 'An Abode Dedicated to the Welfare of All,' and that inclusivity is genuine: the ashram welcomes seekers of every religion, nationality, and background, with no discrimination.

Since 1986, the ashram has been led by Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji, a sannyasi with master's degrees in Sanskrit and philosophy who divides his time between Rishikesh and global interfaith work at the United Nations, World Bank, and Parliament of Religions. Under his stewardship, Parmarth has evolved from purely contemplative center to social-action hub: he founded Ganga Action Parivar to clean the river, the Global Interfaith WASH Alliance for water access, and Divine Shakti Foundation for women's empowerment. Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati, an American-born renunciate who has lived at Parmarth for over 25 years, serves as director of the International Yoga Festival and delivers daily discourses blending Western logic with Vedantic insight.

The ashram's daily rhythm is structured but not rigid. Mornings begin with universal prayers at dawn, followed by Hatha, Vinyasa, and Yoga Nidra classes in open-air pavilions. Mid-morning brings satsang, spiritual discourse, and kirtan. Afternoons are quieter: guests read in the gardens, receive Ayurvedic treatments, or walk the ghats. The day crescendos at sunset with the Ganga Aarti, a 30-minute fire ceremony that draws hundreds of visitors nightly. Young brahmacharis in saffron robes stand on the steps holding brass lamps, chanting Sanskrit mantras as the flames reflect on the river. Pujya Swamiji often presides, and the ceremony closes with floating diyas released into the current. The aarti has been performed without interruption since 1997 and holds a World Book of Records entry for its consistency.

Every March, Parmarth hosts the International Yoga Festival, first organized in 1999 and now drawing 1,200+ participants from 80+ countries. The week-long event features over 70 hours of classes spanning Kundalini, Iyengar, Ashtanga, and Kriya yoga, taught by both Indian masters and internationally recognized teachers like Seane Corn, Shiva Rea, and Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa. Mornings begin with pranayama on the ghats at 5:30 a.m., and evenings feature devotional concerts, cultural performances, and special aarti ceremonies. The festival has been covered by Time, The New York Times, and CNN.

Parmarth Niketan also runs the Parmarth School of Yoga, offering residential 200-hour and 500-hour Yoga Alliance–certified teacher trainings. Students live in ashram quarters, attend daily philosophy lectures on the Yoga Sutras and Bhagavad Gita, practice teaching sequences, and participate fully in ashram life, including seva (service work) such as garden maintenance or helping in the medical camps the ashram runs for local communities. The ashram operates a traditional Gurukul school for children, an orphanage, and environmental education programs. This is not a retreat center that mimics ashram aesthetics; it is a functioning religious institution that happens to welcome guests.
